In Aabenraa, Denmark, electronics store Elsalg has turned routine waste into circular opportunity. Since purchasing a compactor in 2015 to reduce EPS (“flamingo”) storage volume, the business struggled to find a recycling outlet—compacted EPS would typically end up incinerated. That changed in early 2022 thanks to a chance connection with a local reuse centre and

In mid‑2021, Strandby Port in Frederikshavn Municipality became home to Denmark’s latest EPS recycling initiative: a dedicated collection hub for clean EPS packaging, mainly from seafood firms, set up through a collaboration between Strandby Fiskerihavn and RecyclePit. Turning a logistics node into a circular asset Strandby Fiskerihavn handles consistent volumes of EPS packaging—such as fish

When polystyrene packaging arrives at the warehouse of Skumplast Nord in Svenstrup, Denmark, it rarely stays long. Instead of heading for landfill or incineration, the clean EPS is returned directly to the production process—bypassing traditional waste systems entirely. The result: over 100,000 kilograms of CO₂ savings annually through a process that recovers and reuses packaging-grade

At Gothenburg Port, Sweden, fish-processing companies have collaborated to create a functioning EPS recycling system specifically for fish boxes. Sweden Seafood, the primary processor of Norwegian salmon destined for the Swedish market, installed a compactor on-site to manage daily EPS waste—and extended access to other harbour-based seafood firms. System Overview Each week, participating businesses deliver

EPS‑branchen, the Danish EPS industry association, has published a new design guideline to strengthen the recyclability of EPS packaging—complementing the broader European initiative RecyClass. The guide features practical recommendations for manufacturers of EPS fish boxes and white-goods packaging, aiming to support clean sorting and efficient material recovery. Guideline Essentials The design guide urges producers to

On 30 November 2021, the Government of Canada announced a CA $3.5 million investment via Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) to support Montréal-based Polystyvert—backing its transition from demonstration to full commercial-scale polystyrene recycling (Canada). Polystyvert’s technology uses a solvent-based dissolution and purification system to separate EPS (and other polystyrene waste) from contaminants, then repolymerises it into

In late 2021, Uppsala Vatten, in partnership with EPS Sverige and Kungsbacka kommun, launched a pilot to separate expanded polystyrene (EPS, colloquially known as “frigolit”) directly at two recycling centers—Librobäck in Uppsala and Frillesås near Kungsbacka. Transparent collection bags were positioned next to combustible-waste containers to capture foam before it entered incineration streams (uppsalavatten.se). Sorted EPS

In Birkerød, Denmark, municipal waste authority Norfors has opened a facility to collect and compact expanded polystyrene (EPS) — a practical first step toward local EPS recycling. Long sent to incineration, clean white EPS packaging can now be delivered to the site by both households and companies for densification and onward recycling. The new site
