Deposit Model for EPS Barrels Proves a Success at Danish Festival

At Kalundborg Rocker—a Danish music festival with roughly 8,000 guests and 700 volunteers—a new approach to EPS recovery delivered measurable results: 100% of EPS barrels used at the 2019 event were returned for reuse, thanks to a simple deposit model.

The system worked without added complexity: a deposit of 35 DKK + VAT was charged to vendors for each EPS ice barrel (“flamingotønde”) they received. The barrels are typically used to store crushed ice and cold drinks for extended periods during festivals. Upon return, vendors were refunded—ensuring full recovery.

Minimal overhead, maximal return

Festival chair Steen Jensen reported that the deposit system required no extra staff and led to cost savings on incinerable waste disposal. While EPS is lightweight, it occupies significant volume. By removing EPS from mixed waste containers, the festival avoided filling paid disposal units with low‑weight but high‑volume material.

The success wasn’t limited to the festival grounds. Jensen, who operates five Punkt1 electronics retail stores across West Zealand, applied the same reuse logic to his commercial logistics chain. Trucks already in transit between stores now transport used EPS packaging back to Kalundborg, where it is compacted and sold to a recycling firm. This closed-loop practice is expected to generate more than DKK 50,000 in savings over three years.

From festival to function

While the reuse idea had support from external advisors, it began as a practical insight. Jensen had long dealt with EPS packaging in his retail business, noting that the material—although recyclable—is often sent for incineration due to its bulk. Investing in a compactor allowed his team to handle all collected EPS in-house and redirect it to reuse, rather than disposal.

The same logic was extended to the festival. By treating EPS barrels as functional, reusable containers rather than single-use items, Kalundborg Rocker built a simple system:

  • Vendors received barrels with a refundable deposit
  • All barrels were returned without loss or damage
  • No new equipment or staffing was required
  • Festival container use and waste fees were reduced

A circular first mover

While not Denmark’s largest event, Kalundborg Rocker became a first mover in EPS reuse logistics. The dual benefit—environmental recovery and financial savings—has led the organisers to explore expanding the deposit model to festival camping areas in future editions.

At its core, this case is about merging system thinking with operational pragmatism. EPS reuse didn’t require large infrastructure—it just required alignment between incentive, function, and return. That same model now applies across both events and commerce for the Punkt1 group.
