The Nordic Expanded Polystyrene Alliance (NEPSA) has launched an open-access library of editorially verified case studies documenting how expanded polystyrene (EPS) is being recycled and reused in practice. The initiative is designed not only to provide transparency—but to inspire replication, collaboration, and system improvement.
With over 50 cases at launch—and more added on a rolling basis—the collection spans more than a decade of operational experience. It includes examples from municipal drop-off schemes, closed-loop commercial models, densification hubs, and nationwide recovery systems.
Each case is sourced from a public article, report, or interview, and summarized in a neutral, structured format using AI-supported editorial tools. The cases are published using the original report date, offering historical visibility into how EPS circularity has evolved across different geographies.
“Recyclability must be seen, not just stated,” said Chresten Heide-Anderson, Director of NEPSA. “This library gives decision-makers a reference point—not in theory, but in practice. Whether you’re a municipality, EPR operator, or retailer, it’s often easier to act when you can recognise your own situation in a working solution.”
The library reflects NEPSA’s commitment to helping stakeholders scale EPS recycling based on proven approaches. It also builds on a strong Nordic foundation: in Norway, the largest PRO reports over 90% EPS recycling rates. Denmark now has EPS collection in more than 60% of municipalities. In Sweden, curbside mixed plastics collection combined with dedicated drop-off centres ensures nationwide access.
“The industry still has work to do—but that work is underway,” Heide-Anderson added. “This library is part of how we tell the story. Case by case, we aim to show what’s possible—and share that progress through ongoing communication and social media outreach.”
Together, these systems show that high recovery rates for EPS packaging are feasible—and increasingly operational.
