Local Loops: How Vesthimmerland Captures EPS for Sustainable Insulation

In Vesthimmerland, Denmark, expanded polystyrene (EPS) is no longer considered a disposal challenge. It’s a raw material — and it’s being collected, compacted, and recycled into insulation products through a growing municipal-industry partnership.

This local initiative, led by Vesthimmerlands Forsyning and operating from the Aars recycling station, integrates EPS packaging into a functional collection and recycling loop that feeds directly into building insulation manufacturing. The system has been running since 2023 and is already gaining attention as a scalable model for rural circularity.


The system: municipal drop-off and industrial recovery

Residents and small businesses in Vesthimmerland are invited to drop off clean EPS at designated recycling points. The collected material — primarily used packaging from household appliances and electronics — is then densified on-site at the Aars facility using a compaction system that reduces volume by up to 98%.

From there, the compressed EPS is shipped to specialized recyclers, where it is transformed into new EPS boards for insulation use. The monomaterial nature of EPS makes this process efficient and high-yield. As a result, material that once would have been incinerated is now used to reduce building energy demand for decades to come.

The model emphasizes clean stream intake and consistent instructions to users: only uncontaminated white EPS from transport packaging is accepted, with food service and dirty foam explicitly excluded. This ensures high-quality feedstock and supports downstream reuse.


Why this matters: EPS as a local circular resource

This case illustrates how municipal collection programs can unlock value from overlooked waste streams — especially in rural or low-density regions. By treating EPS not as residual waste but as a circular resource, Vesthimmerland has made local infrastructure part of the solution.

The environmental implications are significant. EPS used in insulation reduces energy consumption and associated CO₂ emissions across the lifespan of buildings. By capturing EPS packaging before disposal, the municipality contributes to both material circularity and climate mitigation.

Crucially, this case also helps correct a recurring misperception: that EPS cannot be recycled. The Aars system proves otherwise — and demonstrates that EPS recycling is operational where infrastructure, sorting guidance, and processing logistics align.
