Expol enables community EPS recycling across Auckland

In mid‑2023, Auckland saw a new approach to household EPS recycling: Mitre 10’s Expol programme established community drop-off points—including at Mangawhai ITM—allowing residents to return clean EPS products like coffee cups, protective foam, surfboards, and appliance packaging (Tasman Golf Club). Previously, such items ended up in landfill or blew into waterways.

After collection, Expol compacts or bales the EPS—sometimes using thermal compaction—to create dense bricks for easier transport. These are then processed into insulation fill, drainage products (“Tuff Pods”, Quick Drain), under‑floor fill, and sent abroad for items like fence posts and buckets (NZ Herald, Tasman Golf Club).

The programme currently supports households, builders, and businesses across South and North Island sites—facilitating scalable, visible EPS recovery.

System logic: Retail channels meet industrial reuse
