Sweden launches household EPS recycling with national sorting and reuse collaboration

In 2021, Sweden’s leading plastic packaging recycler, Svensk Plaståtervinning, announced a collaboration with packaging specialist BEWI and its advanced sorting plant, Site Zero. The goal: for the first time in Sweden, recycle household EPS (“frigolit”) at scale. Annually, between 1,000 and 3,000 tonnes of sorted EPS from pick-and-sort facilities will be redirected to BEWI for mechanical recycling and reuse (Svensk plaståtervinning).

When fully operational in 2023, Site Zero will sort EPS along with twelve other plastic types—compared to just four previously—and pipe clean EPS directly into the circular value chain (Svensk plaståtervinning).

System logic: National sorting meets circular reuse

• Infrastructure integration: Site Zero, a high-throughput sorting facility in Motala, segregates household EPS from broader plastic streams.
• Industrial partnership: BEWI receives 1,000–3,000 tonnes annually for reintegration into its EPS manufacturing, enabling recycled content in future products (kth.diva-portal.org, Svensk plaståtervinning).
• Material quality: Mechanical recycling keeps the material monomaterial and suitable for food-grade packaging in the future—and supports BEWI’s ambition of a fully circular EPS business within 3–5 years (Svensk plaståtervinning).

Therese Cederblom of Svensk Plaståtervinning described the initiative as “an important step towards our vision—where all plastic packaging is recycled and becomes new plastic products” (Svensk plaståtervinning).

Why this matters

This case demonstrates how national sorting infrastructure can integrate household EPS into industrial recycling ecosystems. Rather than isolated pilots, Sweden’s approach uses large-scale facilities and packaging industry collaboration to channel high-quality EPS back into production, reinforcing circular design with structural systems.

This model shows that when sorting happens at scale and industrial reuse channels are established, household EPS can be managed just like other major plastic streams—without compromise.
